Part of Lethal Poetry’s vision has been to create a precedent for artists to activate themselves as positive social catalysts. In order for an artist to be considered for residency they must either currently be working with non-profits, youth, or community initiatives, or actively using their work as a means to create a dialog about a humanitarian, social, or ecological issue!
Perspective residents must also be prepared to build a body of work through this residency, which means artists will participate in several Lethal Poetry events and create new work for each event.
While a resident, Lethal Poetry will provide marketing, PR, and at times technical resources, to ensure that their time spent is prosperous! For instance that means, that we provide the resources necessary for resident poets & musicians to create a body of recorded materials, etc.
The residency periods vary upon Lethal Poetry’s discression. Our current guidelines outline that a residency can be as short as 3 months, and as long as 1 year. On some occasions artists have had a second residency, if they are interested in creating a separate body of work.
Becoming a resident is the first stepped to being signed by Lethal Poetry. Make note, not all residents become signed artists.
BECOME A RESIDENT ARTIST
LP is now accepting submissions for Chicago-based eco-oriented, humanitarian, or community oriented resident artist! All mediums are accepted. At this time LP cannot provide an artist with materials or a workspace, however the resident artist would be welcome to exhibit or perform at all LP events for the contracted period, and we will utilize our networks to see that your work sees more recognition by patrons and press durring your residency. For sonic or performance based works we do have some resources in place (recording studio, video documentation, etc) that we utilize at times to enrich our residents experience! If you are a group, and not an individual, make certain that that's clear in the submission, and list names and contact information for all members of your group.
SUBMISSIONS SHOULD INCLUDE: your full legal name, your nickname/stagename (if you have one), a full bio about you, examples of your work & 1-2 paragraph explanation of those pieces (ideas, materials, dimentions, etc), your phone number, your official website, and all other applicable web spaces (ie. facebook, myspace, youtube, e-poets, etc). For performance based artists we do require an audio or video sample of your work. Email submissions to lethal.poetry@gmail.com, your subject MUST read "SUBMISSION:Residency"
RESTRICTIONS: LP does not accept profanity, gratuitus/graphic sexuality or violent content, UNLESS it is a key player to build a dialog about your social/humanitarian subject matter. But please note that we will challenge you to evaluate whether or not that language/imagery/etc is the best way to communicate those ideas. We wish to make all work that is produced under these residencies accessible to people of all ages! Remember, by nature, every social & artistic activist becomes an example/roll model to all of the children and youth who experience thier work!
